Notice of Funding Opportunity

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released the Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO).

The purpose of this program is to facilitate the implementation of Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) for adults with serious mental illness (SMI). Recipients are expected to implement the AOT program, working with civil courts, community partners, and other entities to support community-based treatment for adults with SMI who meet criteria for AOT.

Eligibility is statutorily limited to counties, cities, mental health systems (including mental health authorities), mental health courts, or any other entities with authority under the law of the state in which the applicant is located to implement, monitor and oversee assisted outpatient programs. Applicants must complete a detailed submission process by April 20, 2026, 11:59 p.m. ET.

About the Grant Program

  • Anticipated award ceiling (per award): Up to $500,000 per year per award for AOT programs serving 50 patients or less and up to $750,000 per year per award for AOT programs serving more than 50 patients 
  • Anticipated number of awards: 11-16 awards
  • Anticipated period of performance duration: Up to 60 months
